A 3-day, 21 PDU (2.1 CEU) instructor-led program

Program pre-requisites. You must have successfully completed Five Sigma® Project Management (or hold PMP certification or its equivalent) and have: an interest in advanced, problem-solving tools for better project management; experience managing complex white-collar projects; and the patience to think systemically about a stakeholder's problem.

Understand and integrate multiple causes with multiple effects in one system. This program for the experienced project manager teaches you how to employ systems thinking tools and techniques to solve complex project problems. You will review the fundamentals of powerful, range-based estimation. You will learn new tools to expose the cause-and-effect feedback loops at work in your system. You will apply what you have learned to problems drawn from your project work. You will develop solutions that will last over time.

Details on the dynamics of a typical project, especially staffing. Topics will include: time to find resources; time to learn; time to teach; staffing early and late in the project; and the total cost of learning on the project. The program will explain the late-project Crossing the Desert phenomenon that every project must endure.

Earned-value dynamics. You will explore the dynamics of earned-value performance management in a project - early, in the middle, and late.

Communicating with others. Other topics in the program include communicating with stakeholders and reporting to senior management about the project. This course for the 21st century project manager reflects the latest terminology from The Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (The PMBOK® Guide).

Upon completion, you will be able to:

    1. Skillfully use the language of systems dynamics
    2. Apply systems thinking to your project management issues
    3. Develop a feedback loop description of your project issues
    4. Apply systems templates to your problems
    5. Explain system solutions to others with a causal loop diagram
    6. Understand the deep dynamics of controlling a project's performance
    7. Cite ways to correct an off-plan project in its early, middle, and late stages
    8. Understand earned-value management's strengths and weaknesses
    9. Know where to look for critical delays in your project
    10. Produce persuasive reports to senior management

Who Will Benefit?

·      Experienced project and program managers who wish to take a systems view of their projects
·      Senior technical leads who want to acquire additional quantitative tools for managing projects
·      PMPs who wish to learn more advanced problem-solving tools and techniques

Agenda

Day 1
Introduction, review, basic first steps
1. What is systems thinking? And why will it help me?
2. Why is the Beer Game famous?
3. What are the fundamentals that every project manager should know about project planning, execution, and control? (a brief review)
4. How can I begin to solve one of my chronic project problems?

Day 2
Dynamics of real projects and systems templates
1. What are some of the important dynamics of a typical project?
2. How do earned-value tools work when real delays occur during implementation?
3. How can I apply systems-thinking templates to one of my chronic problems?

Day 3
Risks
1. What happens when scope is poorly managed or discovered late in the project?
2. What are the dynamics of bringing additional staff on board?
3. How do I present the systems solutions to my problem to senior management?
4. How do I cultivate organizational patience to see the solutions through?
